What is a press-and-hold image?

A press-and-hold image uses transparent and opaque pixels to make X generate a pale timeline thumbnail while preserving the original reveal when the image is opened. It is a visual rendering technique, not a video or script.

For the most reliable result, upload the exported PNG8 from a desktop browser at x.com. Mobile apps may re-encode it as JPEG and remove the transparency. After publishing, allow a minute or two for X to generate its thumbnails.

Frequently asked questions

Does the viewer really need to hold the image?

On supported mobile clients, opening or pressing and holding loads the full image against a darker viewer background, revealing the hidden detail.

Why does a normal transparent PNG often fail?

Many editors export RGBA PNGs. X may process them differently or convert them. This tool exports indexed PNG8 designed for the checkerboard reveal pattern.

Is the tool free?

Yes. There is no signup, watermark, or server upload.
